On the US Election

It is an Election eve and I am sitting down at the International Lounge of Los Angeles airport, on my way to the P island, aka B, via Taipei. I just finished my ‘election fun homework’ — which is part of my office’s activity. In my answer sheet I predicted that Obama will win the Election with 353 electoral votes, against McCain with 185. Obama will also get more popular votes, my prediction is he’ll get around 7.5% margin of victory. So, once I come back to the US next week, that country will have a new president, President Obama!

Meanwhile, a friend of mine sent me this link. It’s an interesting map. Of course, it’s easy to predict that the majority of the world is for Obama. But it’s interesting to see the red areas — Cuba, Algeria, Iraq, and Congo! Oh!!

Really hope that correct predictions of elections are among your other talents. Actually my gut feeling tells me that your percentages are on target. Let’s hope the house and congress will see a Democratic landslide in the process also.

But.

If Barack Obama wins, charisma will be residing in the White House. But, that’s not enough. The US and the world can’t live by signs of hope only.

Can he really handle the shift in the global balance of power? The US have to accommodate but can he convince his compatriots?

Can he handle a reasonable redistribution of knowledge, income and power at home? A number of socio-economic reforms is necessary, but is it possible without a revolt against the higher taxes he will have to impose?

Can he handle the US deficit and imminent economical crisis? Can he make classic free marketers into Keynesians?

Can he find an exit strategy to both wars: on terror and on drugs? And is he capable to sell it to the vested interests who earn their living in these ‘industries’?

Obama is charismatic. But the new president should not be a new John F. Kennedy (an abundance of charisma, but lack of performance - Lyndon B. Johnson was the one who really performed). What the US ( and the world, at least Europe) needs is a 21st century F.D. Roosevelt.

Pffff. The oracle of Zeist has spoken. Well, speaking about talents: I seem to have at least one. Arrogance.

watching the election now. frankly, i don’t really care who wins. What matters is it won’t be Bush and we won’t have to keep dealing with his fallout.

great new day for civilization, i say.
