[DC] Back to the American Land on the 17th of August
Not yet home, but it’s only 5.5 hours away from my Tempe home. Many stories to share from all of my transit places as it took me about 5 days to get here from Dayeuhkolot with stopovers in Jakarta, Singapore, and Tokyo.
Now I am sitting here in the circle of Dupont in Washington DC, trying to finalize my powerpoint presentation to deliver this afternoon at the Independence Day’s celebration (and 100 years of Nationalist Awakening) of Indonesian Embassy. Just knew yesterday that apparently I am the only speaker in this event, and it scares me a little.
It’s not my intention to skip the flag ceremony, but I was pretty much jetlaggy, so I missed it and the organizer let me miss it anyway. My first morning in the United States, I let myself wandering around the farmer’s market to get free breakfast as I sampled small cubes of cheese, a (very very) small cup of cold soup and small pieces of nectarine, plum, melon and watermelon. What an innovative way to have free breakfast!
And then I sold my soul to the capitalist evil by having a cup of Starbuck latte just because I needed an Internet connection there.
And now, I think I have to go back to my room at the Embassy, finalizing my thoughts on nationalism by dressing myself in batik. At least, if people doubt my nationalism, my batik would show otherwise, hahaha.
Happy Independence Day my Indonesian fellows!

Glad that you are alive, kicking and “sold your soul to capitalist evil” ( or sold to the internet connections :-). Flag ceremony & symbolism, brave & purity……
Happy Independence day…! ( hope your heart, body mind are free too !)
Better one day wearing batik than thousand days wear non-batik

Mer, why were you nervous? You’re used to give lecture to your students anyway. How was good ole Indonesia? What’s the speech about?
mer: yes, it’s weird. i am not nervous when speaking in front of non-indonesian, though. my indonesian visit was great, awesome. my speech was entitled ‘on being far away: information, networks, & national awakening’ — forgot what it was about… hehe.
